It’s our great privilege to share two special TAP Ambassadors in today’s #AmbassadorSpotlight, Leo & Robin!

Robin donated her kidney to her husband Leo at London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC), where they have now become TAP Ambassadors, supporting patients and potential donors at LHSC and across Ontario!

Leo was diagnosed with PKD over 20 years ago, and the couple knew then that he would eventually need a kidney transplant. As Leo's kidney function declined, and dialysis and/or transplant were inevitable in the next 1-2 years, Robin started the kidney donor workup process.

One year later, she was thrilled and relieved to find out that she was a match for Leo! Because of how proactive and dedicated to Leo’s best outcome the couple were, Robin was able to donate to Leo preemptively, even before he needed dialysis.

After their transplant, Robin & Leo knew that they wanted to give back by sharing their story with others, but weren't exactly sure how they could help. As fate would have it, around that time, they received a letter inviting them to join the Transplant Ambassador Program, and they knew that they had to get involved.

There are unique questions and challenges for kidney recipient/donor spouses, including how best to support one another after undergoing surgery at the same time. If you are considering donating/receiving a kidney to/from your spouse, Robin & Leo would be happy to share their story and how they navigated challenges just like this.
