PATIENTS SEEKING DONORS

After I arrived in Canada with my husband and young daughter Kasia , I worked to become a physician in Canada as this was my profession in Poland.

I completed a 5-year residency in Ottawa, and became a Radiation Oncologist, ultimately joining the Department of Radiation Oncology at Sunnybrook where I spent 28 years treating patients with breast and genitourinary malignancies. I have done extensive research in interprofessional educational interventions and designed many programs to help breast and prostate cancer patients choose the best treatment option.

As a two-time cancer surviver myself, this was incredibly meaningful work. Unfortunately, undergoing radiation treatments caused my kidney function to decline over time. On a trip to Poland in May to visit family my kidneys failed completely and I have been on dialysis ever since. Because of my declining health and rigid dialysis schedule my personal, family and professional life changed entirely. I recently retired from my clinical practice, but hope to continue my research when I feel better.

I know kidney transplant is the best option for me. It will allow me to continue my research and spend more time with my family at our cottage for longer periods of time without returning for dialysis. Waiting for a deceased donor kidney could take 4-8 years. It is very difficult for me to do this, but I am sharing my story with family and friends in the hope of finding a living donor.
