Maggie C
Hi, I'm Maggie
Kidney disease has really affected my quality of life and I now do dialysis three times a week. I can no longer travel out of my city to visit elderly family who live in PEI and one in Ontario because the dialysis centers don't have enough staff to be able to accommodate me dialyzing there.
I have a chest catheter for dialysis which means I can no longer swim for fear of infection. I am not able to work anymore due to my illness and low energy levels. Though I am not able to work a job, I am working on getting my GED so that I can use this time on dialysis to finish high school. I have been working a full time job since I was 17 and have been on my own since I was 16. My parents have passed away, both in 2017, just six months apart. My younger brother (who is also my roommate) has a heart condition so he is not able to donate his kidney to me. I took in our mothers two dogs when she passed so my brother now shares dog duties with me.
I struggle with liquid limits as I have always been a big water drinker and lover of soup! None of these adjustments have been easy for me.
Thank you for reading. If you are thinking of being a kidney donor, I would love to hear from you and have the opportunity to resume a normal life.
