Sheri W
Good day, my name is Sheri.
I am 50 years old and was born with only one kidney. My lone kidney did well for me for a long time, but unfortunately, it's wearing out.
My husband and I moved from New Brunswick to Oshawa just a few years before my kidneys failed and here we have a much smaller network. My husband was hoping to donate his kidney, but in a unbelievable twist of fate, he is unable to because he was also born with only one kidney and doesn't have an extra one to give!
My doctor tells me that getting a transplant before dialysis (a pre-emptive transplant) would be the best thing for me. I am a relatively young woman, with so much life left to live. As my kidneys decline, I am getting sicker each day with increasing nausea and fatigue, and I will soon need to go on dialysis.
I am having trouble accepting that on dialysis, I may no longer be able to work at the job that I love in the food service industry, or spend quality time with my husband and my amazing 19 year daughter like I wish I had hoped to at this stage in my life.
On my good days, I enjoy Harley-Davidsons, my wonderful dogs, walking, gardening, flowers and just being in nature. But I have so many things I still want to do! Getting a kidney transplant would give me a second chance at life. If you are considering being a living kidney donor, please reach out to me.
It would literally mean the world.
