It’s a new year, and we’re back with a new Ambassador spotlight!

Courtney is a Transplant Ambassador at St. Joseph's Hamilton. She is a kidney transplant recipient who celebrated her 8th year kidney strong - or her “Kidneyversary”, as she fondly calls it - this past November. She received her kidney at the age of 16 from a hero who registered to Be a Donor, after about 5 months on dialysis.

For Courtney, being a Transplant Ambassador allows her to help patients who are going through similar experiences to hers.

Just how impactful it is to share lived experiences was exemplified for Courtney when, as an Ambassador, she witnessed how talking with a fellow patient in a clinic waiting room had a domino effect.

“I was in the waiting room of the outpatient clinic and I was talking to a patient”, she recalls. “Some other patients overheard us talking, and soon, everyone in the waiting room was sharing their experiences and journeys with kidney disease. It was pretty amazing to watch and be a part of!”
